ABOUT

Hi there, and welcome to Moto Domains – a website about all things Dirt Bikes.

My name is Greg and Dirt Bike riding has been a passion of mine since I had my first ride on a dirt bike at age 14 in Auckland, New Zealand.

My teens were spent blasting through the Woodhill pine forest just north of Auckland, and looking back now, I realize how lucky I was to have such a fantastic area to learn my riding skills, mainly on sandy forestry trails. My twenties were spent competing internationally in a different type of riding – Speedway.

I’m in my fifties now, and riding still remains my passion, although now I take the time to enjoy the ride, and enjoy the superior handling of today’s dirt bikes.

A Brief Story About My Motorcycling Background

My teens were spent competing in 4-hour enduros, motocross events, and trail riding with my mates. I consider myself fortunate to have grown up through the evolution of the early motocross and enduro bikes from the ’70s on.

I saw the whole motocross field turn yellow with the introduction of the first Suzuki RMs, the first Japanese long-travel suspension bikes to be factory produced. No water cooling, hydraulic disk brakes, or fuel injection back then.

At the end of my teens, I became drawn to another form of racing – Speedway. Western Springs Speedway in Auckland was the local track and drew about 50,000 people every Saturday night.

Back then the bikes were hugely popular, and the greatest of all speedway riders, Ivan Mauger M.B.E., O.B.E. (six times world speedway champion, 3 times world long track champion) regularly brought international riders out for special events.

I began my speedway racing career and was soon drawn to compete in England, where all promising riders had to go at the time to compete against the world’s best. I was fortunate enough to race for the Sheffield Tigers, a team that had several other New Zealanders racing, and Ivan Mauger, my boyhood idol, then semi-retired, was the team coach.

I raced for several seasons in England and returned to New Zealand to race again at Western Springs. This was the late eighties and looking back, it was a fantastic era to be riding. There were numerous top international riders all competing there at the time.

After I retired from my speedway racing career I returned to my roots – Dirt bikes.

These days my riding involves trail riding on my KTM 525 EXC around South East Queensland, Australia and just getting into Adventure Motorcycle camping weekends on a BMW 650 GS Dakar, an armchair ride compared to the KTM.

    • Hi Sam. Thanks for your comments. Yes, it’s a lifetime of riding dirt bikes of all types. I don’t see any reason to stop. I have friends my age from my speedway racing days who are actually still racing – for fun now.
I checked out your website and you have some great articles there. I’ve bookmarked it to get back and read more later. Very professional looking. I see you live in Utah. What a great riding spot. I’d love to go there one day.
      Keep up the good work.

  2. Thanks Greg for the article especially the Steve McQueen advertisement for Honda. I remember watching the movie back in the 70s on any Sunday and seeing Steve McQueen never saw the commercial it was great. First bikes in 1972 Bellevue Nebraska, offutt Air Force Base. SL 70 and SL 100 couldn’t wait to strip the lights off and go racing. Thanks again good stuff.

    • Hi Doug. Yes, great memories from the seventies. Watched the ‘On Any Sunday’ movies many times and still get a lot of pleasure from them. I owned the XL 250 motorsport and had a friend who had an SL 100. Later had the first XR 500. Great bikes. Wheelie machines. Back in the day you could strip the lights off a trail bike and go racing. Thanks for your thoughts.
      Greg
