How To Choose A Motorcycle Camping Tent:

Deciding on your budget is the first step and this will help narrow down your choices out of the huge range available.

Most tents designed for motorcycle camping are compact, light, and easy to strap to your bike.

A big decision that narrows the choice down even further is to decide if you want to also park your bike in the tent, out of sight of prying eyes, and out of the weather.

Not all riders want this option, but let’s face it, sleeping with your bike – you know you want to!

Even if you don’t park your bike in the tent overnight, there are definite advantages to having that garage space:

  • Just sit and chill with your mates
  • Work on your bike out of the weather
  • Store and hang your riding gear and muddy boots to dry
  • Cook out of the weather

Top 3 Things To Consider:

Now that you’ve decided on your budget and whether you want to park your bike in the tent, there are some important things to also consider:

1. Size: Motorcycle camping tents are generally 1 or 2-person tents, but even if you are riding alone many riders go for the 2-person tent to give you room to store your gear.

So a 3-person tent is really good for 2, a 4-person tent is really good for 3, and so on.

The packed size is also a major consideration depending on the type of bike you have, and the type of panniers you have. A packed size of 18-24″ long and about 4-7″ wide is good for carrying on a bike.

Tip: Packing the poles separately allows you to get the tent bag down smaller, and the poles can be easily strapped to the bike.

2. Weight: This is a consideration when carrying it on your bike. The load on your bike affects the places you can get to and the trails you can negotiate because your bike’s handling is seriously affected.

3. Ease of Assembly: The last thing you want after a long day’s ride is to have to fumble around, maybe even after dark, to set up your tent. Quick easy assembly is essential.

Some other factors to consider when choosing your tent are:

  • Seasons: Most tents are 3 season – Spring/Summer/Fall. You really don’t need a 4 season tent unless you intend to use it for mountaineering or use it in the snow. They are also heavier, which is not so suitable for carrying on a motorcycle
  • Good quality zippers: YKK zippers are the way to go. They should be nice and smooth and not prone to snagging.
  • The number of doors: At least 2 doors is definitely an advantage, it means you don’t have to climb over anyone if you have to get up in the night.
  • Heavier duty fabric: Look for a higher Denier rating, these are more rugged and durable. This is especially important on the floor. A seamless ‘bathtub’ style floor is also a feature to look for.
  • Taped seams: After the joint is sewn, if the seam is taped it provides less chance of it being a leak point.
  • A Vestibule: Even if the tent does not have a garage for your bike, a vestibule is great for storing gear that you don’t want in the tent with you.
  • Airflow: Large mesh ventilation panels are important especially if you are camping in warm areas.
  • Freestanding Design: The big advantage of a freestanding tent is that you can just pick it up and move it if you decide to change position. You can also pick it up to shake out any dirt and dust that’s got in there.
  • Guy out loops: These are loops or panels attached to the fly that provide extra tie-down points for the guy ropes. Great for windy exposed areas.

Other things worth carrying:

  • A Tarp: Putting a tarp down under your tent gives an extra layer of protection, especially on rocky ground, and increases the life of your tent. Some have this included.
  • A tent repair kit: A handy thing to carry if you need to carry out an emergency repair.
  • Heavy-duty tent pegs: Often the pegs that come with a tent are pretty flimsy and bend easily. Aluminium ‘Y’ section pegs are the way to go especially if you a trying to get them into rocky ground.

Here are 10 of the Best Adventure Motorcycle Camping Tents available today:

1. Vuz Moto 12 Foot Waterproof Motorcycle Tent

Vuz Moto TentIf you love the Lone Rider or the Redverz style motorcycle tents (at nos. 2 & 4 below) with the motorcycle garage, the Vuz Moto offers you all the same benefits, but at about half the price.

It offers shelter for the bike and rider with a dedicated garage for your bike and sleeping for up to three people, plus your bike.

It is made of completely waterproof materials, which is priority number one since it always seems to rain when you put a tent up.

There is a large vestibule area at the front for storing gear like muddy boots that you don’t want in the sleeping area.

When the bike is not in there it is an ideal area for just sitting and relaxing, or storing gear like jackets, pants, and boots that you want to dry.

It has four access points to allow you to enter and exit from any direction without having to climb over your buddies.

The outer fly can stand alone and be separated from the inner tent. This gives you the option of using it as a large garage for working on your bike.

The inner tent has a bathtub-style floor, and there’s even a small patch of fabric attached outside the door to put your wet shoes on.

2. Lone Rider Moto Tent V2

Lone Rider Moto Tent

The Lone Rider Moto Tent is a moto camping tent that allows you to keep your bike undercover, which is great peace of mind for security. If you have had a lot of rain overnight, your bike is still dry, which is always good.

The garage area is tall enough to stand in and get a fully loaded adventure bike with panniers in. If you leave the bike outside there is room for 2 or 3 adults to sit in camp chairs out of the elements. A large vestibule also gives you extra gear storage space.

The bedroom area is suitable for two people plus your luggage and has access front and back which gives you good airflow. There are 3 mesh windows.

The tent bag has built-in straps that allow you to fasten it to your bike without the need for bungee straps.

Erecting it is very quick and easy with only 3 poles which are color-coded to make them easy to locate and insert. Lone Rider has a video that demonstrates set-up, and once you have done it a few times, it can be put up in less than 10 minutes.

There is a light hanging point in the garage, but not in the bedroom, which does seem a bit strange, but ideal for hanging gear to dry.

Both the bedroom and garage pods have pockets (4) for storing things like keys, phones, etc.

The inner tent is detachable which allows you to use the tent as a huge garage when working on your bike.

3. NTK Indy GT XL 6 Person Outdoor Dome TentNTK Indy GT XL 6 Person Outdoor Dome Tent

The NTK Indy GT XL 6-Person Tent is a lightweight 3 season 2 door tent.

While not specifically designed for motorcycle riders, it has all the features you’re looking for if you do not want to store your bike in the tent.

It has a large front canopy area which is great for gear storage and has a clear window on each side. The unique European design front vestibule has an awning and side door with a detachable PE tarp floor.

The aerodynamic dome shape is good for resisting strong winds and rain.

A great feature is the waterproof rainfly which has a double layer 190T polyester laminated with polyurethane, heat-welded PU seam sealed, and UV protected.

The inner tent has a large 2-way zipper D-style door with full mosquito mesh protection which gives full ventilation. There is a roomy utility pocket, a gear loft for storage, and mesh ventilation to the roof.

The frame features extra-thick Nano-Flex technology fiberglass poles which are interconnected with high-performance elastic and double gold chrome-plated ferrule hardware.

NTK claims to be the only company that developed its own fiberglass compound which has been tested over the decades.

4. Redverz Atacama Tent

Redverz Atacama Tent

The Redverz Atacama Tent is another tent specifically designed with the motorcyclist in mind. Their garage design started an entirely new tent genre back in 2008.

The garage area is big enough to get a fully loaded adventure bike with panniers into comfortably and there is a full standing height, even if you’re 6’4″.

It is accessed by 2 full-height doors front and back, so your motorcycle can easily be parked inside.

The sleeping area easily fits 3 people and their all gear and is accessed by 2 large J doors from the garage which have both privacy screens and mosquito nets. There is another door at the back, so there is no climbing over your bunkmates in the night.

The bathtub-style floor is 190T Rip-stop Nylon waterproofed to 10,000 mm, which is as good as any tent you can get.

The whole thing folds down to a manageable 21″ x 10″ bundle and weighs in at 14 pounds, not the lightest in this list, but with extra space and features comes a bit of extra weight.

It can be set up and taken down in about 10 minutes once you’ve done it a few times.

5. Harley Davidson Dome Tent

Harley Davidson Dome Tent

The Harley Davidson Dome Tent isn’t designed specifically for adventure bikes, but if you can get a Harley Davidson cruiser in there, you will certainly get an adventure bike in.

In fact, you can actually get three bikes in the garage, as proven in a reviewer’s pictures.

It also makes this list because of its sheer cool factor. Harley Davidson is a legendary name, so it follows that equipment bearing their name is quality stuff.

The sleeping area measures 8′ x 7′ and is classed as a four-person tent, but you had better be very good friends because it is really more comfortable with 2 or 3 people.

This tent features 40″x 40″ (1m x 1m) front and rear doors with insect mesh and inside zipper storm flaps, so there’s plenty of ventilation going through the tent. There are also breathable mesh panels in the roof.

The rainfly features ‘Clearview’ windows to let some extra light in and is really easy to attach with side release buckles for tension adjustment.

I really like that the motorcycle vestibule is detachable, so if you are camping without your bike, you can simply pack just the dome tent. The vestibule is such a great private sitting area, it’s good to have even without your bike.

The tent is packaged in its own bag with a separate smaller bag for the 14 tent stakes and a bag for the shock-corded fiberglass frame. This is a great idea and makes it easier to pack on your bike.

The tent is quick and easy to set up once you’re familiar with the instructions and easy to repack.

Features:

  • Tent size: Sleep area: 8’/2.4m x 7’/2.1m Center Height: 4’4″/1.3m Vestibule: 8’4″/2.54m x 8’7″/2.6m Center Height: 5’6″/1.7m

  • Rainfly: Features ‘Clearview’ windows for extra light
  • Weight: 12 pounds/5.4kg
  • Doors: 2 x 40″ x 40″ (1m x 1m)

Pros:

  • Easy to put up
  • Good Price
  • Removable motorcycle vestibule

Cons:

  • No bathtub-style floor, although seams are still reinforced
  • Head height too low to stand in

6. MSR Elixir 2 Tent

MSR Elixir 2 Tent

The MSR Elixir 2 Tent is a freestanding lightweight two-person tent.

While not designed specifically for motorcyclists, it is great if there is just one or two of you, and light enough to be used for backpacking.

It weighs in at just under six pounds and packs down to a 7″ x 20″ so it’s easy to pack onto your bike.

It features two doors and two vestibules, so you don’t have to climb over your companion to get in and out during the night. What a great idea for a two-person tent.

The bathtub-style floor and taped-seam rainfly mean you don’t have to worry about staying dry if it rains in the night.

Putting it up is made easier with the use of color-coded poles, clips, and webbing.

There are even glow-in-the-dark zipper pulls to make it easy to find the zippers in the dark, and built-in gear lofts to put your small items in for finding quickly.

It even includes an additional groundsheet.

7. Coleman Sundome 2-Person Dome Tent

Coleman 2 person Sundome Tent

The Coleman Sundome 2-Person Dome Tent is the smallest and cheapest tent in this review. While not designed specifically for motorcyclists, it is suitable for any type of camping where you want to travel light with minimal bulk.

It is a 2-season tent, so really only suitable for warmer weather.

The ‘half-flysheet’ combines with large weather-protected mesh vent panels in the roof and a floor-level vent which gives good ventilation. Further cross ventilation is provided by the large hooded rear window

The peak of the flysheet provides some shade and rain protection over the door and the rear window.

Inside there are storage pockets to keep your small items organized, and the heavy-duty Polyethylene bathtub-style floor with welded seams guards against a leaky floor.

Setup is quick and easy and can be done in under 10 minutes by one person using the Instaclip pole attachments and continuous pole sleeves. It is designed to withstand up to 35+mph winds.

The Coleman 2-person tent is excellent value for money in the under $50 price range. It is an extremely popular tent with literally thousands of positive reviews from users.

8. Teton Sports Mountain Ultra 3-Person Tent

Teton Sports Mountain Ultra 3 dome tent

Teton Sports is a well-known outdoors company, also famous for making great hydration packs. Refer to No. 5 in my 10 Best Hydration Packs review.

Teton Sports launched the Mountain Ultra tent line in 2014, with four different sizes ranging from single-person up to four-person.

All the tents have the same construction and overall concept. The 2, 3, and 4-person tents have two doors so that you can enter the tent from either side.

The inner tent is Micro-Mesh which gives you 360-degree views of your campsite and great ventilation, or if you like a little privacy and weather protection simply snap on your rain fly.

The clip-on rainfly creates a vestibule over each entry door to stow your gear that you don’t want in the tent with you.

Extra high walls to the bathtub-style floor help prevent water from getting into the tent, and there are reinforced heat-taped seams and anchor points.

Mesh gear pockets allow you to store your smaller items for easy access during the night.

Included with the tent is a 150D Oxford footprint to help keep your tent in good condition by giving you some protection from the ground surface.

The Teton Sports Mountain Ultra tents can easily be set up and taken down in about 5 minutes. They’re designed with the average person in mind and are suitable for the backpacker, adventure motorcyclist, car camping, and everything in between.

9. NTK Cherokee GT 2 to 3-Person Dome Tent

NTK Cherokee GT Dome TentNTK has been producing high-quality products for outdoor enthusiasts since 1974.

The NTK Cherokee GT series is part of their premium line of tents which includes the 2/3 person, 3/4 person, 5/6 person, and 8/9 person, all 3 season tents. All have one door except the 8/9 person which is a two-door tent.

While having two doors is a huge bonus if you are camping with two people in the tent, I had to include this tent even though it has only one door, as it was such a great tent with so many features (Like the NTK Indy GT XL 6 person at No. 3 in this review). If you are the only one sleeping in it, one door is not an issue.

All the NTK Cherokee tents feature the ‘NO-SEE-UM’ polyester mesh fabric that is now used in a lot of the better tents available. It helps keep even the smallest mosquitos from getting inside, yet your view remains excellent compared to some of the older tent mesh screens.

The bathtub-style floor is an anti-fungus polyethylene material with a silver-coated inner layer to prevent leaks and keep you dry.

The extra thick Nano-flex fiberglass poles interconnect with double gold chrome plated ferrule hardware and strong elastic, offering a sturdy construction.

A unique feature is the CPAI-84 fire-retardant rainfly, the only tent I’ve come across with a fire-retardant rating.

In the under $100 price range, this tent is excellent value for money, ideal for couples, and suitable for everyone from backpackers and motorcyclists through to car campers.

Features:

  • Tent size: 82″/2.10m long, 61″/1.55m wide, 45″/1.15m tall.

10. Mountainsmith Morrison 2-Person Tent

Mountainsmith Morrison Tent

Mountainsmith is a well-respected brand known mostly for its tents and portable shelters.

If you need a good quality 2-person tent without breaking the budget the Mountainsmith Morrison 2-person tent may be the perfect choice for you.

While it is designed for backpackers, its light weight also makes it perfect for adventure motorcycle camping. It is a three-season tent designed for Summer, Spring, and Fall.

This tent isn’t lacking in features despite its low price.

The bathtub-style floor with taped seams ensures you will stay dry, which is really a must for any tent.

It has two doors and two vestibules, so there is no climbing over somebody in the night, and the two vestibules are great for storing the gear you don’t want in the tent with you.

The ‘No-See-Um’ mesh allows you to go without the rainfly in warmer weather.

It uses clips for the pole attachment, rather than sleeves, for a quicker easier setup.

This tent features three mesh storage pockets inside at the corners. These mesh pockets are very helpful in keeping things at hand’s reach and managed. It is very helpful in keeping smaller things like a phone or keys.

The tent packs down to two bags, which is great if you want to share the load, and for motorcyclists makes it easier to pack in separate places on your bike. The setup instructions are printed on the storage sack, so there’s no losing it.

It is such a good budget tent that it was given the “Killer Deal” award in Backpacker Magazine’s Gear Guide for 2011 & 2012.

When it comes down to it the Morrison 2 is a great tent that is perfect for an individual or couple who wants a quality shelter but doesn’t have a lot of money to shell out.

Final Thoughts

The increase in popularity of adventure bikes has led to some great tents designed specifically for the adventure motorcycle rider.

Although the ability to park your bike out of the weather and away from prying eyes is a huge bonus, not everyone needs this feature. Some prefer to travel extra light and leave the bike in the open.

Personally, I think that even if you don’t put the bike in the tent at night, having that extra space for just chilling with your riding buddies, cooking a meal, drying your wet riding gear, or working on the bike out of the weather is a huge benefit.

In this review, I’ve looked at the two most popular garage-type tents, the Lone Rider Moto Tent, and the Redverz Atacama, both top-of-the-line in quality, but also top of the price range.

If that style of tent is what you want, but the budget is a factor, all those features can be found for about half the price in the Vuz Moto Tent.

If you like to travel light and parking your bike out of sight is not a priority with you, the lightweight 2-person dome tents at numbers 6 to 10, all within 5 to 7.5 pounds and ranging from $39 to $187 make an excellent choice.

You would be fine with any of these tents, but the NTK Cherokee GT has all the features you want and for an affordable price.

The NTK Indy GT XL 6 Person Tent makes my list as a great allrounder tent, suitable for the adventure motorcycle rider who doesn’t want to get the bike in the tent, but also makes a great family tent, big enough for the whole family when you don’t have your bike with you.

All of the tents in this review have overwhelmingly positive reviews from users. Just click the links to read what others say about them.

    • Yes, the Lone Rider Moto Tent is one of the most popular motorcycle tents that you can park your bike in.

Even if you don’t use it with your motorcycle, the extra space makes a great area to sit and relax out of the weather.

      Thanks for your comments.

  2. Wow! I must confess that this was a large way helpful. It’s also a difficult task picking the best adventure bike camping or canopy but all the points you have provided will be duely followed when next I’m purchasing one. I love the fact that you said it is always cool to subscribe to the ones that are very quick and easy to erect and can be put up in less than 10 minutes. Thanks

  3. Wow!! Haha!! Confusion for me. I love love everyone of them. I have a Suzuki bike and I would love to go motorcycle camping again one day but damn! There would be a hell of a choice to make from these. But I guess I’ll most tilt to the. Harley Davidson Dome Tent. I love the aesthetics although it doesn’t have as much sophistication as most of the others. But I do love the look of it and its sort of ambiguity

    • Yes, it certainly is a hard choice, they’re all great tents. The Harley Davidson one is cool for sure, even if it doesn’t have some of the features of the others. Plenty of space for just sitting and chilling though.

      Thanks for our comments.

  4. Motorcycle tents are creative innovation in recent times. With a a variety of them, and made for safety and comfort during camping and expedition. For me, I’ll will go with the Lone Rider Moto Tent V2, although pricey buh has great features, light weight, has enough room for for luggages and a couple of adult, and it’s easy to erect and has quality construction.

  6. Dirt bikes ridding is pretty fun especially to the younger generation. Some of the reasons that people who are ridding dirt bikes got accidents is that many of these youths ridding it don’t stick to rules and they always want to do a new skill with the bike whenever ridding it, and also forgetting its dangers. Tents for dirt bikes are more flexible than AVTs bike because Dirt bikes are light in weight. Thanks for the article I really find this your article educative.

    • Hi Chris. Yes, you’d have a hard job getting an ATV in a tent. It’s a great idea to be able to park your bike out of the weather, and it’s good for security also. Even if you don’t put the bike in the tent, the extra room is always a bonus.

      Thanks for dropping in.

  8. Great article Greg. I looked at these a couple of years ago when there were only one or two on the market and the prices were crazy. Now there are some more affordable options out there this will certainly be my go-to when my current tent wears out. For now, we just strap a lightweight tarp between the bike and the tent to create a vestibule and partially protect the bike.

    • Hi Arran. That’s a good idea to give some protection to the bike. I like the concept of getting your bike out of the weather and for security. Even if you don’t park the bike in the tent, it makes a great area to sit and chill after a days ride. I’m up for a new tent, so it will be one of these. Thanks for your thoughts.

  9. It made a lot of sense when you said that a 1 man tent turns into a half man tent or 2 turns into 1 or a 4 man turns into a 3 man tent once you put shit in it that you dont want to get wet over night. Cause I know I drag most if not all of my stuff into my tent at night myself so yeah, that should be a no brainer even though I’ve actually never thought about it lol. I always look for 2 man tents by default just cause I like the extra space. Plus im single so its nice to be able to have room to waller around with some dirty enduro chic when you meet one and it clicks like that, cause in my experience, if your adventure takes you any more than 100 miles away from home then you’ll meet a few moto honeys that would love to check out all the neat features inside your tent, js 😏. It doesn’t happen every time, but it does happen and its gonna suck to be you when you bump into Ms Willing or Ms Wantsit for the first time and theres nowhere half-way private to take a tumble or 3 when the mood strikes. So, 2 and 3 man tents should be the aim when looking for a personal tent for yourself if for no other reason than to keep anything detached from your bike or your person safe dry un stolen or lost.

    • That’s another good way of looking at it. If you have the extra room you always have space for a special guest if you’re lucky enough. So a 3 person tent would be even better, room for your gear and your guest.
      Thanks for your thoughts.
